Race Report 29/01/17 - Freethorpe 10, SEAA Cross Country

It was a very busy weekend of running, with the South of England Athletic Association (SEAA) Cross Country Championships, at Parliament Hills in Hampstead Heath, and the Freethorpe 10, hosted by GYDAC.

But first, a special mention to Mandy Foyster and Colin Weller for completing the Pedlar's Way Ultra Marathon, a 48 mile trail race from Knettishall Heath to Holme-next-the-sea. Mandy was third lady, in 8hrs and 32mins - a stunning achievement - and Colin finished in 8hrs 50mins.

A bus full of NRR's travelled to the SEAA Southern Cross Country Championships - and the field of athletes at the race was astounding. They were there to compete and win, and weren't messing around. The elite runners glided over the mud, and ran up hills at the same pace they would going down them. Truly a sight to behold, and it was great to run with athletes with such high ability. Disappointingly, the initial hill was mud free and grassy, but that was soon a distant memory, as the lapped course (2 laps - 8k for ladies and 3 laps - 15k for men) threw up plenty of boggy, slippery mud, tight corners, easy to miss holes, and some tough hills. Nevertheless, the whole day was a fantastic experience, and any road runner should at least take part in the event at least one in their running career - running Parliament Hills is a badge of honour!

The Freethorpe 10 is the first in the Leathes Prior Grand Prix Race, and as a 10 mile race, makes good training for a spring marathon. There were over 800 registered runners for the sell out race, and 83 Norwich Road Runners took to the streets of Freethorpe and Reedham. The conditions were perfect, with clear blue skies, minimal wind and a moderate temperature. Not only were runners there in force, but we had a great field of athletes through all the age categories.

Ben Russell won the race, in a closely fought contest with Piers Arnold of City of Norwich AC. Ben not only won the race, in a stunning 51m 05s, but also beat the all time course record by more than two minutes. Both Piers and third place Michael Eccles, of Norfolk Gazelles, beat the previous course record. A stunning race for Ben, and a fantastic performance.

Runners also picked up many other awards. Ben Russel, Daniel Middleton and Paul Blazey won the senior male team prize, and Sarah Griffiths (who also won 2nd female overall), Sarah Peachey, and Jessica Behan won the senior female team prize. The ladies veterans team was won by Caroline Houghton, Stacey Harper and Catherine Henery. Individual age category prizes were won by Karl Sherry, Catherine Henery, Sally Cushing and Alison Stewart.

Truly a fantastic race, and it was fantastic to see road runners pick up so many prizes for their performance. Hopefully a sign of more to come this year!

Now, a normal runner would do either the SEAA Southern XC Champs or the Freethorpe 10, but some chose to do both. That takes some doing....

Until next time...
